One peek inside a fabric store reveals yards of project possibilities: colorful cotton prints, slinky synthetics, plush piles of fleece, and so much more. With so many options, selecting a single fabric for your particular project may seem overwhelming.
Help is here! In this chapter, we help you narrow the number of candidates by choosing fabric according to intended use. By following pattern recommendations and paying attention to those “Not suited for …” notes, you’ll be that much closer to finding the perfect fabric for your project.
Cloth Considerations
Most fabrics are made with a particular purpose in mind. Heavyweight home décor textiles are intended to be used as upholstery or drapery fabrics. Fashion fabrics are manufactured for specific garment types. Fiber content, fabric construction, weight, drape, and design are a few factors to consider when selecting fabric for projects.
That said, we believe some rules are made to be broken, and sometimes the “wrong” fabric may be exactly right for your project. It’s still important to know the ins and outs of fabric selection, however, so you can bend the rules appropriately and avoid unpleasant surprises.
